Home insurance discounts that actually matter

Carriers advertise dozens of small discounts. A handful move premiums meaningfully — and most homeowners are missing at least one. Here's where the real savings are.

Big-mover discounts (10%+)

  • Multi-policy (bundling): 10-25% off when home + auto are with the same carrier. The single largest discount in home insurance.
  • Wind mitigation (coastal): 10-50% off in hurricane-exposed markets for homes with hurricane straps, hip roof, opening protection (impact windows), and reinforced roof-deck attachment. Get a wind mitigation inspection if you live in a coastal state.
  • Impact-resistant roof (Class 4): 15-30% off in hail-prone states (Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, much of the Midwest).
  • New roof: roofs under 5 years old typically get 10-20% off vs. older roofs.
  • Monitored security: 5-15% off with a professionally-monitored alarm system. Self-monitored systems usually qualify for less.

Mid-tier discounts (3-10%)

  • Smart home devices: water leak sensors (Flo, Moen), smart smoke detectors, monitored sump pumps. Some carriers (Hippo, Lemonade, Travelers) offer 3-8% off for installed devices.
  • Claim-free history: 5-10% after 3-5 years claim-free. Usually applied automatically.
  • New home / new construction: 10-25% off for newly-built homes. Phases out as the home ages.
  • Renovation discounts: updated electrical (no knob-and-tube), updated plumbing (no galvanized or polybutylene), updated HVAC. Especially valuable on older homes.
  • Paid-in-full: 3-5% off when you pay the annual premium upfront rather than monthly.
  • Auto-pay / paperless: 2-5% off for automatic payment and electronic documents.
  • Loyalty: 3-5% after 3+ years with the same carrier. Like auto, can be offset by base-rate creep.

Affinity discounts

Available if you belong to specific groups:

  • Military: USAA itself is military-only; other major carriers offer 5-10% off for active military and veterans
  • AARP (50+): The Hartford has an AARP-specific program structured for older homeowners
  • Professional associations: teachers, doctors, engineers, accountants often have affinity programs
  • Alumni: some carriers partner with universities
  • Employer discounts: many large employers negotiate group rates — check your benefits portal

Risk-mitigation discounts (location-specific)

These are powerful in their relevant markets:

  • Wildfire mitigation (CA, AZ, CO, OR): defensible space cleared to 100 feet, Class A roof, ember-resistant vents, hardened windows. Can mean the difference between getting coverage at all in high-risk zones.
  • Hurricane mitigation (FL, TX coastal, NC, SC, GA): wind mitigation inspection identifying hurricane straps, hip roof, opening protection. 10-50% premium reductions in hurricane-exposed markets.
  • Earthquake retrofitting (CA): bolting foundation, bracing chimney, reinforcing cripple walls. Reduces earthquake endorsement premiums by 10-25%.
  • Hail-resistant roof (Midwest): Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. 15-30% reductions in hail-belt states.

How to capture all discounts you qualify for

  1. List every possible affiliation when quoting — employer, school, military, professional associations. Many discounts only apply when you mention them.
  2. Get a wind mitigation inspection if you're in a coastal state. Cost: $75-$150. Potential savings: hundreds to thousands per year.
  3. Schedule a re-rate annually — ask your carrier directly: "What discounts am I getting? What discounts am I eligible for that I'm not getting?"
  4. Update your carrier on home improvements — new roof, new wiring, new HVAC, new security system, new water leak sensors. These trigger new discount eligibility.
  5. Bundle annually — if your auto and home are with different carriers, periodically re-shop the bundle. Bundle pricing is the single biggest lever.
