What is a Car Accident?

A car accident is an event that occurs when one or more vehicles collide, resulting in property damage, injury, or death. Car accidents are a leading cause of death and injury worldwide and are the most common type of personal injury claim.

Causes of Car Accidents

The most common causes of car accidents include distracted driving, intoxicated driving, and speeding. Distracted driving is when a driver operates a vehicle while doing something else that takes their attention away from driving. This can include activities such as texting, talking on the phone, or eating. Intoxicated driving is when a driver operates a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Finally, speeding is when a driver travels at a speed greater than the posted speed limit or the speed that is appropriate for the conditions.

Car Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019 there were 36,096 fatalities in motor vehicle accidents in the United States. This represented a 2-percent increase from 2018, when there were 35,367 fatalities. In addition, more than 2.5 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2019.

Additionally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in 2018. This accounted for 3.3 percent of all drivers.

Car Accident Prevention

The best way to avoid a car accident is to be a responsible driver. This means avoiding distractions, obeying traffic laws, and following the rules of the road. Additionally, drivers should be aware of their surroundings and pay attention to road signs and hazards. Finally, it is important to wear a seat belt while driving and avoid driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Take the necessary steps to stay safe on the road and help prevent car accidents. Be sure to always drive responsibly, buckle up, and never drink and drive.
