At-Fault Accident
An accident the insurance company determines was caused by your negligence or actions.
What is at-fault accident?
An at-fault accident is one where your insurer determines you were primarily responsible. At-fault accidents typically lead to premium increases at your next renewal and stay on your record for 3-5 years.
Details
Insurer fault determinations are based on the facts of the accident, police reports, witness statements, and physical evidence. In some no-fault states, fault determination still happens for purposes of liability above the no-fault threshold. Most carriers offer ‘accident forgiveness’ as an add-on that prevents your first at-fault accident from raising rates.
