FAQ
Does my auto insurance cover rental cars?
Usually, yes — your personal auto insurance extends to rental cars in the United States for personal use. But there are important exceptions:
- Coverage matches your policy. If you have only liability, that’s all that extends to the rental — collision damage is your responsibility.
- Personal use only. Most policies exclude rentals used for business travel (rideshare, deliveries).
- Geographic limits. Many US policies don’t cover rentals in Mexico, and some don’t cover Canada. International rentals almost always need separate coverage.
- Loss-of-use fees. The rental company can charge you for revenue lost while the car is repaired. Some personal policies cover this; many don’t.
- Diminution of value. Rental companies may charge for the depreciation in value after damage. Most personal policies exclude this.
Credit card rental coverage often fills the gaps — many premium cards include collision damage waiver as a card benefit. Pay for the rental with the card to activate.
Buying rental company coverage is usually overpriced but eliminates ambiguity. For one-off business or international rentals, it’s often worth it.
