FAQ
Can I have two auto insurance policies on the same car?
Technically yes, but it’s almost always a bad idea. If you file a claim, both insurers will follow ‘other insurance’ clauses in their policies — usually splitting the payment proportionally, with each side covering deductibles separately. You won’t get paid twice for the same damage.
The legitimate use case for multiple policies:
- Non-overlapping coverage: e.g., a personal auto policy for daily driving and a commercial policy for business use of the same vehicle
- Excess liability: an umbrella policy specifically designed to stack above your auto liability
If you accidentally have two overlapping policies (often after a switch where the old one wasn’t canceled), cancel one immediately. You’re paying twice for no extra benefit, and insurers can deny one claim if double coverage was undisclosed.
